Students in 3rd-8th grade will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment(SBA) and students in K-5 will be taking the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Below are some recommendations to help students be most successful.

  • Make sure students get lots of sleep
  • Make sure students eat breakfast prior to testing
  • Send them to school with a bottle of water
  • If laptop chargers are at home, please bring them
  • Students will use their own laptop to take the SBA

Here is some information about what assessments are and why students take them:

What is an assessment? An assessment is simply one tool used to measure a person’s learning or knowledge at a specific moment in time. The outcome of that assessment can tell us what a person knows and even if there is a problem with the assessment itself. Assessments do not tell us how smart a person is, they just.

What is MAP? The MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test gives teachers and families an understanding of what students have learned, helping teachers understand individual student strengths and growth areas, and guide instructional decisions to support student learning. There is a math portion and an English Language Arts section.

What is the SBA? SBA stands for Smarter Balanced Assessment and measures what students have learned in Reading, Writing, and Math each year and if students can do the kinds of schoolwork that are generally expected in a specific grade level.

What is the WCAS? WCAS stands for Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science. Only 5th and 8th grade students will take this assessment.

You will be able to see your child’s scores about two weeks after they complete the SBA/WCAS.
